Hi Mike,

Thanks for creating this site; it is most helpful. Although the more problems I read about, the more convinced I am that I need to change my boiler!

We have a 5 yr Gulfstream A-class which is beginning to sound "unhealthy". When the boiler fires up, the yellow light flashes and becomes permanent; then it sounds as if it is slowing down and 5mins later the yellow light turns off, before ~1min later re-igniting and firing up again. This cycle repeats continually. We have a thermostats set at 20 C and our rads are hot.

Whilst this is happening the boiler tends to make a "whistling" noise. We also noticed that our condensate trap is leaking water but looking to get the trap changed (although this didn;t register a lock-out warning on the circuit board).

We're not sure what the issue is, although about 6mths we did install a water softener in the house, though I was told that the boiler would have inhibitors and salt is good for the system as it removes limescale.

We also noticed that one of the electric pumps is v. hot remains warm even though the system shuts down. The pressure is between 1 (when the system turns off) to 2.5bars (when the system is running).

Appreciate your advice.
Thx

Who services this unit?
I do not do Gulf streams.
Nor does Carlsberg, Could not resist that sorry.
Whistling noise could be fan.
Water softener should be no problem.
Pumps will be hot as very near the heat source.
But if a pump has failed, then the unit would not run very long.
Seems as if you need who ever service your unit.
Or Google one. Or look on the home page on this site to see if one in your area. ( list of advertisers)
I will say a couple of things though.
What ever mankind makes will go wrong.
What ever car, TV, mobile phone etc etc. you have or use. You will always find the bad stuff on the internet or what have you.
All boilers etc can be a pain when they go wrong.
How much has it cost you in the 5 years?
Not including servicing of course.
Have you read all the posts ref your unit on this site?
Have you the book? If not down load one for Free at Gledhill website.
Remember about working with GAS etc etc. Get the right people.

Hi mike,
yep very true in what you say. We had the boiler serviced by british gas first time round; but they put up the premium excessively the next year despite the fact that we had no call outs the previous year; I guess they just don't like Gledhill boilers.

So far, i've had to replace only the condensate trap; but thinking the fan may need replacing. But i guess, once one item on the boiler begins to wear, it's likely that others may need replacing. Rather than to deal with the hassle of persistant call-outs, I was thinking of changing the boiler (any recommendations to replace the gulfstream A-class?). I was told that a Valiant would cost around 1500 but offers 5yr warranty, hence thinking that over time, the saving on insurance through the varranty would pay for itself.

So far the engineers who've looked at the boiler are clueless as to what to do with the electrics on the boiler; even though i've got insurance on electrics, electricians just don';t know how to deal with the control board on the boiler.

Thx again,

aceq

If you go for a Valiant.
Be warned the system needs to be spotless!
If not you will have trouble. Which is not covered.
In fact all will need a spotless system. As in clean.
You will need a Magnaclean with filter or the Fernox TF1.
There must be someone in your area who can do the Gulfstream.Have you asked Gledhill?
If a guy calls and is stuck.
There is the Gledhill Tech line. Which is 60p per minute.
But any good Gas engineer should really be able to deal with these units.
Engineer goes out of the window really or does not apply.
It is the same with the Powermax's which are similar really.
What ever boiler you have NOT all will be capable. NOT even the makers own guys.
2 of the biggest firms / companies in the UK have been out to Gledhills.
1 fitted the wrong PCB but the drawing was inside the unit and marked up.
After a couple of weeks they just left it.
Another had a blocked cold feed. But the could not undo the vent connection on the header tank.
But I did! As would anyone one with half a brain.
Another blocked cold feed/ need new unit/ £3000:00p
I cleared it for £150:00p plus other work at £150. Total £300:00p
£2700 saved!
You are only fed up with the Gulfstream because no one has a clue.
Find the right guy and you may be sorted.
Use Gledhill
Or Google
Happy Christmas
