boiler mate 2 hot water pump runs a lot, boiler not staying on long enough

Post  malcolm4567 on Wed Oct 02, 2013 2:18 pm

The problem I have with my boiler mate 2, is that after the heating has been used the system seems to take ages to heat the storage tank up again. Therefore we don't have enough hot water to run a bath. The green light comes on at the boiler mate, the potterton boiler fires up for a few seconds and then cuts out and the green light on the boiler flashes. It seems to cycle like this, the boiler firing up for a few seconds. Both pipes at the boiler are hot and the pump to the boiler is working. The pump is set to level 3. Both circuit boards on the boiler mate 2 were changed recently to stop the relay clicking noises.

First thing to check is;
The unit full?
But your Potterton boiler could be at fault.
Try turning the Potterton down low and see how long it runs.
Try altering the BM II stat too.
The idea is to get it running longer.
Use no heating, does the unit get hot then?
How much DHW then?
If unit is low this could be the trouble.
But Potterton must run longer.
Is the boiler pump on the BM II working?

Thank Mike for your quick reply, There is plenty of hot water if the heating hasn't been on. The f & E tank is filled up past the mark and the ball valve works correctly. When the heating is on, hot water comes up the expansion pipe into the top tank. The top tank never overfills so I guess that means it is still feeding the cylinder. I have tried altering the BM II stat but it didn't seem to make any difference. The boiler pump is working, I need to flush the radiators out as its had sentinel x400 in for a few weeks now. Unfortunately the drain cock next to the boiler does not let any water out so I guess I'll have to drain the system through the radiators which is micro bore pipe.
I'll check the things you've listed.

Malcolm,

Which Potterton boiler do you have, exactly? I suspect you have a Suprima. Well known for heating up to a random (and different) temperature on every ignition cycle when fitted with the latest Siemens control board. This does not play well when connected to a Boilermate.

Mike,
It is a potterton Suprima 60, its got the 2nd version of the circuit board fitted, not the latest one with the wiring harness.

Mike,
I drained the system, only to discover the feeder tank did not empty into the cylinder.
I removed the f&E tank and connected a garden hose onto the feed into the boiler.
The mains pressure unblocked the feed pipe and I flushed the system through.

Your thought of the cylinder not being full must have been the issue.

I've put it all back together and used the f&e tank to fill the cylinder and radiators.
Every thing seems to be working fine now, the boiler stays on until the cylinder is up to temp, then the pump stops running a few minutes later.

Thanks for your help.
I'll drain some out tomorrow and add the x100 inhibitor.
