Corrosion at top of tank casing Empty Corrosion at top of tank casing

Post  graemejardin Thu Feb 20, 2014 4:58 am

We have a pulsacoil III boiler, it has run with no problem for 13 years. At the top of the boiler there is a pipe that looks like its job is to occasionally release hot water back into the header tank. Around the point where the pipe goes into the boiler jacket I have spotted a lot of white deposit around the pipe and the top of the casing, and when I scrape that away I can see there is a lot of corrosion and a small hole through the casing on the flat metal top panel of the casing. The area is dry now, but I presume there is moisture that builds up in the area at times. The pipe is hot all the time, so I guess it is a leak rather than condensation.

Can anyone tell me how to treat this problem?

thanks,
Graeme

Hi Graeme

There are two of those pipes, one on the upper of the top tank ,on one site, one on the lower on the other. The upper is the air vent, the lower is the fill pipe for the main tank. Yes this sounds like a minor small leak, but nothing serious. Just use a spanner and tight them up and brush off the dirt ( lime stone) that is all.
Kind regards Mario at Mario’s Boiler Service

Personally I would avoid tightening it up as the chances are that the 3/4" fiber washer that seals the joint is on it's last legs and tightening it up will make it break apart and leak quite badly and the white lime scale build up is probably stopping it leaking properly at the moment. For the time it takes (less than an hour) I would empty the top fill tank with whatever small containers you can find and a sponge, undo the 2 connections to the main tank, clean up the connections and replace the 2x 3/4" fiber washers then reconnect and fill to correct level.
