Turn off water to header tank.
Block up cold feed to unit.
As you DO NOT want any going into unit.
Put some gloves etc on.
And after preparing the area as in dust sheets / towel.
Manually remove it using a small container and buckets.
Clean it out.
And then refill.
Check after a few weeks / months as be happen again quickly.
Then further works would be required.

Hi Mike,

I cleaned header tank out completely on 1st October, looked again yesterday and it is again full of sludge!
I will clean it out again, but do you know what could be causing it? And how I can prevent it?

Thanks
Andy

You need to clean your unit / system.
1 litre to every 100 litrs.

Hi Mike,

Thanks. What do you suggest Fernox?
Can I simply pour it in the header tank?

Thanks

Any sludge remover / cleaner.
Remember 1 litre to every 100 litres.
Sometimes 500 ml depending on make / strength.

Hi Mike,

Applied the cleaner, let it run through the system for a week, then drained down the system. Refilled and added an inhibitor into the header tank while refilling. Heating, hot water all works fine, but now got a strong smell from header tank and there is a layer of scum formed on top of the water. Is this normal?
Looks like I can remove it easy enough if need be?

Thanks
Andy

Hi Mike,

Not sure if it's related or not but now getting massive visible amount of limescale ( green in colour ) coming out of every hot tap in the house.
Live in very hard water area, any idea what is causing it and how I can stop it from happening?

Thanks
Andy

Had a water softener fitted?
If not it may be the PHE is / has failed.
Run the taps and see if it clears.
