New house Pulsaocoil boiler

Hi I have recently moved into a new property with a Pulsacoil boiler. There are two switches on the wall, one is the red switch and the other is (I think) the immersion switch. Firstly I was told that the immersion switch should be on for one hour only to boost the hot water. This was done but then the hot water ran out! I was then told by an engineer that the switch (immersion) needs to be on consistently, all the time in order for constant hot water to be received. Is this true and is this not going to be quite constly?

If your new place really IS new then it is very unlikely to have a Pulsacoil 2000 as they stopped making them four years ago!

I think you'll have a Pulsacoil A Class, and if you have then your plumber is talking rubbish. BOTH switches NEED to be ON, ALL the time for it to work properly. Then the off-peak heat up will occur correctly overnight using low-cost electricity and you won't need to use the 'boost' button.

If you really do have a Pulsacoil 2000, then you should have three switches on the wall. Two stay ON and one, the boost switch, stays OFF except when you have used up all the hot water heated the previous night.

If you are not getting plenty of hot water in the morning without using the boost, then your appliance has a fault.

I am still slightly confused though. It is definitely a Pulsacoil 2000 (apartments are not very new) and there is only 2 switches on the wall. Now I am only receiving hot water for about 10 minutes and then it is going cold again, then heats about if left for about 2 hours. Hopefully I have someone to come and look at this afternoon but any further information you could provide would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Emma,

In that case your boiler is probably not correctly installed. A Pulsacoil 2000 needs three power supplies:

1) Permanently ON power to the control board/pump
2) Off-peak power supply (on night time only) to main heater element
3) Permanently available power supply to the 'booster' heater element, normally left OFF but available to be turned on by the user in exceptional circumstances when the stored hot water has run out during the day.

Supplies 2) and 3) can be combined into one if a special 'Economy 7' timer switch is fitted next to the appliance. This would result in there being only two switches on the wall.

Thank you so much for your responses, I have queried this with the person who is looking into my boiler problem. He seems to think that this is just the way that the boilers work!!! I wonder if you can shed some more light for me? Is it the case with the Pulsacoil 2000 that you would only get hot water for about 15 mins at a time, after which it will go cold until left for another couple of hours when it will be hot again. I was under the impression form the manual I printed off that these boilers would provide "hot water to your taps whenever you need it".

I am so frustrated at the moment. Any help is still greatly appreciated.
