Intermittent System faults Empty Intermittent System faults

Post  Marc1999 Wed Jan 14, 2009 11:25 am

Hi
I have a Boilermate 2000 (with no overide)with a Potterton Suprima Boiler in the Kitchen, I have been having continual intermittent faults with the system where for no reason I get no heating at all of hot water for days and then all of a suddern the sytem fires up and works fine. I have had several visits from British Gas (the experts apparently) who have said they have changed everything they can, it then works for a few more days but then fails again. on 2 occasions by the time British Gas have arrived the system is then working again and there is no fault. Has anybody experienced an intermittent fault like this before? I have had 2 new PCB Boards in the Potterton and new Thermistors (twice)

Thanks in advance
Marc

Hi Mark,

Sorry to say, but this still sounds to me like the Suprima control board is the problem.

I've seen a number of Suprimas with the latest Siemens board fitted which heat up to a different temperature every time they are operated. Sometimes the burners turn OFF at 76 degrees C other times at 35 degrees C, or at any random temp in between. The CH will not run until the store in the Boilermate reaches 65 degrees C soi if the boiler is turning OFF at 60 degrees C then you will have no CH. If the store is only at 40 degress C then the HW will only give you warm, not HOT water. Yet another new board in the boiler fixes it.

Ultimately though, even a competent and knowledgable BG engineer can only fault-trace the fault while the fault is manifesting itself. You may as well cancel engineer visits if the system is working when they are due.

Cheers, Mike

Intermittent System faults Empty Re: Intermittent System faults

Hello Mike,

Thankyou for your reply I have a BG engineer visiting tomorrow as I we have nothing again at the moment.
Reading your reply am I correct in thinking that the Suprima Control Board monitors the Temperature of the Water as it heats it and sends it back up to the Boilermate? Is there any Temperature monitoring in the Boilermate itself to tell the suprima when to start heating again?
Is it also possible that the heat exchanger in the Boilermate could also need replacing as I do live in a Hard Water area?

Thanks again
Marc

Intermittent System faults Empty Re: Intermittent System faults

Hi,

Just Posting an update, we had a BG engineer visit and as a suggested by Mike the issue was the Suprima Control Board again, it was turning off the burners at 44 degrees hence the CH pump would not run and the HW from the taps was only warm, he changed the next day and all is great with the CH.

I have another Issue though, the HW is only hot for one shower at a time after that the water runs Hot and Cold. I am correct in thinking that as the Shower or Hot Tap is running and the Tank is being topped up from the mains, the water should be heated by a Heat Exchanger? If so could this Heat Exchanger be faulty or scaled up?. We have lived in the property 5 years and we have never had the system flushed of the inhibitor checked, how ofter should this be done and could this also be a problem ?

Kind Regards
Marc Budd
