Well if the ideal is firing up.
THEN one of the pipes would get hot.
Check that the ideal is lit.
It may sound as is it is running BUT NOT LIT.
The boilermate 2000 sounds as if its asking the ideal for heat.
You could check that the boiler pump in the 2000 is running.
Sound like the Ideal to me.

Thanks mike , the ideal is lit I can see the flame , but to add a bit more info I have it running on the back up system but still no heat or hot water ! I'm wondering if it could be the heat exchange scaled up/blocked ?

Well if the boiler is lit.
And the pipes from the boiler are not hot ( strange)
Then I would go for the boiler pump.
You need to check the pump is turning by removing the big screw,
You will not get heating until the unit reaches 60c
The heat exchanger would not stop you getting heating.
You could have blockage ( sludge) on the boiler pipe work / pump.
Have you gone through the fault codes?
If no book down load one for free from Gledhill.
If you get really stuck, you can ring Gledhill tech line at 60p per min.
They will go through it all on the phone.
Sometimes it ain't easy!

Once again thanks mike , but would the boiler pump not working effect the 2000 from working on the back up system ? I'm at work at minute but will investigate further when I get home wich will be sooner than expected due to moaning cold wife and kids at home lol ,thanks phil

When you removed the pump screw did you insert little finger?
Did you adjust pump speed?
Even though the pump is turning the impeller could have come adrift.
Is the BM 2000 upstairs and the boiler down stairs?
