BoilerMate A-Class not circulating

Post  Tabbycat on Thu Mar 03, 2011 5:26 pm

Hi all,

We have a Suprima 60 feeding our BoilerMate OV (A-Class) I believe. BoilerMate was fitted about three years ago by previous householder and the Suprima 11 years, but has had PCB replaced.

System has suddenly stopped working this afternoon. Suprima boiler fires, but after a couple of minutes stops. It sounds to me as if the water is boiling and then the boiler thermostat cuts off after a few minutes.

Turning attention to the BoilerMate, I don't see any error condition externally, but when I put it in "SWITCH" mode (something I've never tried before) I don't get any water pumped to the radiators.

My suspicion is it may be a pump or the circuitry controlling it. So far I have taken the front of the BoilerMate and checked the 7-segment displays. These appear to show the right conditions, i.e. heat is being called, pumps active etc.

I haven't tried the Gledhill diagnostics test as yet, on the basis there's probably enough evidence to point towards a definite fault requiring a professional to fix.

That said, any suggestions on any obvious things I could check?

I haven't checked the header tanl - I assumed this would be self filling.

Hi,

Check the header tank to see if it is self filling, Also check the boiler pump (bottom left hand side of the gledhill) if it has 240V when the boiler is fired and is not working then it may need replacing. try venting the pump aswell.

Hope this helps

Thanks for your swift response Gary

Had left Boilermate in Switch mode and Constant overnight, but no heat being circulated (pumps not running either).

Then after reading your reply I checked the header tank (it is at normal level) and then switched to Normal mode.
Boiler fires up, now running continuously. Checked 240v - present at all three pumps (using my trusty power tracer).

After 15 minutes, radiators getting nice and hot.
Weird, so all is looking normal?!

How would I vent the pump(s) and which one(s)?

Does this point to any particular fault?

I'm assuming boiler is ok.

Hi Stewart,

To vent the pumps, partially undo the big silver screw on the front of the pump until water starts to come out, then re-secure it.

It could be an intermittent fault, keep an eye on it.

Thanks Gary, should I do the venting with the system switched off?

Also, when I undo that big silver screw, what pressure is the water under?

Appreciate your very helpful advice so far

Stewart

You can vent with the system on or off doesn't matter, no pressure at all, it will only trickle out.
