Boiler advice

Hi

I have a Pulsacoil 2000 boiler. For two weeks now the on peak heater was not working and off peak was working fine. Then 3 days ago the off peak stopped heating as well. I have breakdown cover so the engineer has just visited and left. He says that the off peak meter just needed resetting and will work fine now and the on peak one needs replacing. Then he put a pointed screw driver into a small hole at near the bottom of the boiler and found that it was coming back wet. So he suggested that there is a leak in the cylinder. Following this he said he can't repair the boiler and it will need to be replaced. I was a bit annoyed that in 5 minutes of his visit he gave up on any repairs. I wanted to get a second opinion. Does the unit really need replacing? the Off peak should work fine now however he didn't replace the on peak component saying that there is a leak.

Well if the unit is leaking then it is game over.
Have you been losing water from the top tank?

no, top tank water level seems to be fine. is it worth trying to put a sealant into the top tank, as he suggested this may go into the main cylinder and seal the leak.

Well I would keep an eye on the top tank / water level.
If it does not go down.
The no leak on unit.

Yes you can replace;
The on peak heater
The on peak stat.

This would be quite a journey for Mike to come from Norwich, shame, I was at Reading today for a customer. As Mike mentioned, both Immersion are changeable also the Immersion Thermostats. If the other engineer found the wet patch at the Thermostat pocket, the Immersion has to be changed, not a new Boiler of course.
