Help with diagnosis please - no hot water

I have a Pulsacoil III which was in place when I moved in 18 mths ago. Since then I've established that if I'm away on an extended business trip I have to fill up the top tank on my return or no hot water. Last week I returned Saturday night, had hot water Sunday, but none Monday morning or since.

So far I've tried:
- Filled top tank to its limit
- Checked 2 green lights - both are off - but then they've never been on (I only knew this was unusual when I read the manual after this issue arose!)
- Tried to press the reset button - but either it's already in, or I'm confused. It doesn't seem like a button - the outside portion is solid, and the cross-like centre doesn't move in or out??
- Switched on the on-peak supply - no change, no sound from the pump, or any hot water (left it on a full day)

My next ideas were:
- Check if there's a float in the top tank - never seen one, I've always just filled right up - it's not easy to see into
- Check all the pipes, fixings etc. to see if anything at all is hot first thing in the morning
- Switch on & off the main power

Anything else I can try before admitting defeat & taking a day off work to get someone to look at it? I'd be really annoyed if it turned out to be a stuck float but equally I'm not interested in any amateur electrical work. Thanks!!

Hi Hejoba,

If you feel in the header tank you will find the float valve switch, it sounds like yours could have snapped off. This is a common problem in PulsaCoil 3 units.

On the front of the F & E tank is a flexible wire conduit if you feel inside the F & E tank to where the flexible conduit is you will find the float switch valve (Float Switch).

If it has dropped you maybe able to manually lift it, you will then hear the relay clicking in and out.

Very sorry for the late response to your post. In case someone else comes across the same situation, it may be worth checking if your system is getting hot. The thermostat rods my have failed, the elements may have failed, the spurs fuses have blown, the relays faulty. It could be a number of other things also that have caused this. I would recommend you do the basics if you do not have the knowledge or equipment to fault find. Simply replace the fuses inside the switched fused spurs.
