Sudden loss of pressure and hot water Empty Sudden loss of pressure and hot water

Post  karen007 Mon Jan 23, 2012 6:28 am

I have a 12 year old Systemate III which was producing hot water yesterday (Sunday) and Saturday.

Between Sunday and Monday morning the pressure went down to zero (it was on 1.5) and of course hot water stopped being produced.

I've checked the overflow pipe and there is no evidence of a leak.

I don't use the heating, just the hot water (although there are radiators attached).

Any ideas of what could have gone wrong?

Have you re pressurised it?

Yes, I put the pressure back up to 1.5 and nothing happened.

It think it might be the pump. There are three settings - 1, 2 and 3 - on the pump that seems to work the hot water (by pumping water around the system). Nothing happens on settings 1 and 2 (the pump is dead) but after turning the boiler and tank off and then turning them back on and moving the switch on the pump to 3, the pump started up. However, the pump is very noisy. Could this be the ball bearings failing? With the noisy pump working the boiler fired up and hot water started coming into the pipes that feed the tank. That said, the pump is so noisy I turned it off because it didn't sound normal and I didn't want to cause a fire or anything.

If it were the pump, how much should a replacement cost (for the part)?

I didn't leave the pump on long enough to see if hot water started coming back through the taps but I did also try the hearing. Nothing happens to the diverter switch when I turn the heating on, so maybe that pump has also failed.

maybe air in the pump, bleed it.
if using hot water and no heating for a long time, then the diverter valve could be jammed.
new pump approx £100.00p plus fitting
Get some one out.
As not really a DIY job.

thanks Mike. will do. I'm going to try HomeServe in the first instance but is there a central London based Gledhill specialist that you know of?

Many thanks

a heating eng. has visited and as the fan is running but the boiler not firing (except where they tapped the air pressure switch, which resulted in hot water at a high pressure), they are ordering a new air pressure switch. Once the boiler went off after the tank was up to it's water temperature, the boiler won't now flick on and the fan is just whirring.

they're also ordering a new central heating control box as it doesn't have power from the dial clock.

They also mentioned something about checking the pressure gauge in the tank itself (behind a panel) when they come back.

So possibly not the pump but the boiler.

Just thought I'd update in case it helps anyone else.

I'll let you know if that fixes it.
