Heating Element replacement

Hi
my daughters boiler had an issue at xmas when it was identified that one of the two heater elements had failed
It has worked fine since but the other has gone now
I can buy a new element but unsure how to drain the water sufficiently to allow me to remove old one and put on new one
Can anyone give me some guidance please
Its er first flat and we dont have the funds to replace it
