Immersion (Boost) button

Hi all. I put the immersion on at about 4pm today and at 6pm there was no hot water at all. At 7:15 pm the water is now hot so can anyone explain how this occurs?
Is it possible there I some sort of timer installed on the system and if so, should I leave the immersion button on all the time?
